The history of cooperativism in San José de las Matas is closely linked to the presence of the missionary fathers of the MSC Sacred Heart, the Catholic Church and in a special way the Reverend Father Carlos Guillot, MSC, who was appointed on May 5, 1950, Cooperating Vicar of the Parish of San José de las Matas. Father Guillot deeply wanted to put into practice something new for the community, since the socio-economic conditions of San José de las Matas, when the middle of the 20th century arrived, were not very flattering, as a result of the scarce development of productive activities and the cultural backwardness, which created a favorable field for the cooperative idea. As Father Guillot came from an eminently cooperative country and knew that philosophy with great depth, he did not hesitate to undertake an awareness-raising effort throughout the Sierra on the importance of cooperativism. To ensure the success of the project, Father Carlos Guillot counted on the collaboration of Catholic action, made up of men with humanitarian sentiments, workers, dedicated to the service of God, who did not hesitate to propagate the ideas of cooperativism, citing among them: Luis Bisonó, Juan Arturo Jáquez (Llillí), Juan de la Mata Estévez, José Bisonó, Joaquín Luciano and Augusto Bisonó . Then they joined: Alexis Jáquez, Ramón A. Vargas, Porfirio Valerio, Josecito Torres, Ramón Abréu, Arturito and Germán Jáquez .
