The Bank of Jamaica, established by the Bank of Jamaica Law (1960), began operations in May 1961, terminating the Currency Board System which had been in existence from 1939. Victoria Mutual began operations with The Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) which was first opened its doors in 1878. Our founders, a group of Clergymen, led by then Rector of the Kingston Parish Church, Reverend G.W. Downer, formed VMBS with a vision of "meeting the needs of the deserving thrifty". VMBS' founding fathers had a goal of finding a way to partner with industrious, but financially excluded Jamaicans, to assist them with savings and home acquisition. The National Export-Import Bank of Jamaica (EXIM Bank) is Jamaica’s premier trade financing institution and the Caribbean’s first Export-Import Bank. The Jamaica Mortgage Bank was established in 1971, as a private limited company under the Companies Act of 1965 with an authorized share capital of $5 million. On June 5, 1973, under Act of Parliament No. 16 of 1973, the Bank was converted to a statutory corporation. The authorized, issued and fully paid-up share capital of the Bank is at present $500 million. The Jamaica Mortgage Bank (JMB) was established with the mandate to finance safe and affordable housing so that all Jamaicans will have access to home ownership. The JMB seeks to mobilize financial resources for on-lending to private and public sector developers and financial institutions, developing an active secondary mortgage market and providing mortgage indemnity insurance.

The Development Bank of Jamaica Limited (DBJ) is a wholly owned Government institution and its only shareholder is the Accountant-General. The Bank is a result of the merger of two national development entities, the Agricultural Credit Bank Limited and the National Development Bank, on April 1, 2000. The National Investment Bank of Jamaica Limited was further amalgamated into the DBJ in 2006. The DBJ falls under the purview of the Ministry of Finance and Planning. Its Board of Directors is comprised mainly of private sector leaders who are appointed by the Minister of Finance. The DBJ, currently the only development financing organisation in the country, is committed to Jamaican entrepreneurs in the productive sectors and at all stages of development. While the DBJ provides funding and technical assistance to large projects, it has expanded and improved its assistance to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) which are widely recognised as the engine of economic growth and development, especially in small economies. The Bank’s Mission is to provide ‘opportunities to all Jamaicans to improve their quality of life through development financing, capacity building, public-private partnership and privatisation solutions in keeping with Government policy’.
